In Italian, professions follow precise grammatical rules about gender and articles. A list of words is not enough: knowing how to use them in a sentence requires understanding how they work. This guide covers vocabulary by sector, agreement rules, and expressions for talking about your job.
The article reappears when the profession noun is qualified by an adjective or additional detail: È un bravo medico (he is a good doctor). Without an adjective, no article.
To ask and state your profession, the most common phrases are:
Professions ending in -tore / -trice: masculine professions ending in -tore form their feminine in -trice.
Invariable professions ending in -ista, -ata: these nouns keep the same form in masculine and feminine. Only the article changes.
Professions ending in -e: some profession nouns ending in -e are invariable in gender, others have two forms. The modern tendency is towards invariability.

How to say your profession in Italian
